Cowboys win big over the Bears 26-9

Sunday's dual against the UNC Bears started out at 157 pounds with UW’s Archie Colgan taking on Beau Roberts of UNC. During the seven minute bout Colgan scored two takedowns, earned two nearfall points, and accumulated enough riding time for a point to secure the 7-1 victory.

At 165, the next match would be the only one of the night between two ranked wrestlers as 18th ranked Dakota Friesth took to the mat to square off against UNC's 19th ranked Mitchell Polkowske.  Friesth was the first to score, with a takedown early in the first period. In total Dakota scored two takedowns and an escape en route to winning the bout 5-4 over Polkowske.

The 174 pound bout was exciting! Andy McCulley, earned 5 takedowns and an escape prior to securing the fall over UNC's Josh Van Tine with just 1 second left on the clock.

At 184 pounds, UW’s Luke Paine would square off against UNC’s Keith Johnson. The redshirt freshman put on a great show earning two takedowns, a reversal, three nearfall points, and 1:34 of riding time to earn the 10-2 major decision victory over Johnson.

Shane Woods at 197 pounds took to the mat to wrestle UNC’s Trent Noon. Woods earned a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second, scoring the only points of the match in his 3-0 victory over Noon.

The 285 pound match would be between Leland Pfeifer of UW and Brian Macchione of UNC. After an exciting back and forth battle Pfeifer ended up losing the bout 8-5 to Macchione

Gunnar Woodburn was next up at 125 pounds facing UNC’s 20th ranked Trey Andrews. Woodburn wrestled a great match, scoring a pair of takedowns on his ranked opponent. Unfortunately for Woodburn, Andrews was able to score a pair of reversals and force a sudden victory overtime period. Andrews scored a takedown to win the bout 6-4.

At 133 pounds the Cowboys’ Drew Templeman would be wrestling Michael Espinoza of UNC. Templeman scored the first points of the bout with a takedown in the first period. He then scored three more points for nearfall in the second period. The third period was exciting with a lot of points being scored, ultimately the match ended with a 12-3 major decision for Templeman.

The 141 pound bout was the lowest scoring of the dual, UNC's Ben Polkowske got an escape in the second period, and the only point of the match to win over Wyoming's Cole Mendenhall.

UW’s Austin Breckenridge would face UNC’s Nick Adams in the final match of the dual at 149 pounds. Going into the third period Breckenridge had a 2-1 lead and almost four minutes of riding time. He scored five more points, including an escape and two takedowns in the final period on his way to the 8-2 victory.
